Leash training...

Well today is a knew day. We all know that and it is especially true for dogs. They live in the present and you have a chance to start every day fresh over again.
Like the last few days the first part of the walk went pretty good. Not many problems there. When it came to the second part, Gina started the same way as the day before as soon as it went uphill. But this time I had an different approach planned. After all you don't want to train a dog by intimidation. So I got her to sit and got some high quality goodies ready. In Gina's case that are pieces of Knackwurst. So she got a goodie when she was walking by my side without pulling. And for most parts that worked. Not only for short distances but for longer distances as well. I have to admit there weren't that many distractions around. And of course she can smell the goodies in my hand. And I used that fact to add a verbal cue to it. Every time when Gina started to pull away just calling her be her name was enough to get her focus on my and she then did walk next to me again. Of course I rewarded that behavior. I think she got the the basic principle of it.But by no means do I believe she has learned it. That will take time and it will take many repetitions. But for the first try with that exercise...I'm very happy with that.
