A tough Spot to be in...

Recently it has become quite apparent that I am in quite a though spot. There is just no easy answer...and it has to do with me co-worker. Yes I do understand that he is inexperienced and young and that he has his head anywhere but with his work. On the other hand that's really not my problem. Fact is that he's making way more mistakes than is actually tolerable. And he's been with the company now for 6 month and I just don't see any improvement. He asks me the same questions as he did 6 month ago. And sometimes I looks like he really doesn't like his job either. If he were at least looking for a solution before asking me what to do...well that would be a sign of improvement. And on top of that many of the questions are actually basic accounting questions. If you had accounting in school and have been with the accounting department for 6 month you shouldn't be asking questions like those.
I see all those mistakes when balancing out the transfer accounts between the different sub-companies, so I know that there are a lot of mistakes being made. And those mistakes are bound to come out the next time the tax guys get the accounting data.
So it's really quite a tough spot. On the one hand you don't want to be the guy who's throwing him under the bus and is going to talk to the boss about the issue. On the other hand my responsibility and loyalty towards my employer would demand just that. When the tax guys get the data they're going to bring up the entire issue.
I told my co-worker to have a talk with the boss about the issue before he's gonna hear it from the tax guys. But he still hasn't don't that either. Talking about the mistakes he makes doesn't seem to accomplish anything either.
If I say something to the boss...I'm definitely the bad guy. But on the other hand if I don't say anything at all will make me look bad in the eyes of my boss.
Up till now it looked like as if my co-worker had to prepare the accounting paperwork for the sub-company he's responsible for himself. But that's looking more and more unlikely. It looks like I will have to prepare that paperwork as well. If that should be the case I probably end up giving the boss a heads up about the issue.
Another problem with my co-worker is that he expects to be handed a working solution for every problem. But we're a family owned business and the boss expects us to be "Doers". You see a problem in the current procedure, you think it through, you come up with a solution and you implement the solution without bothering the boss or causing more administrative work than before.
Anyone with any thoughts about that issue would be highly appreciated.
